Not Your Mom's Christmas Sweater...

I found this wonderful vintage mint green sweater at the thrift store two days ago along with a matching skirt. Ya know that feeling you get when you've been ambivalently rummaging around for a while & then suddenly spot something that looks just the right color or fabric, and then upon a closer examination your heart jumps when the silky little vintage tag with the cutsie pastel font confirms your hopes? That's how it felt when I found this set.

Turtle Rock

This morning I was spontaneously apprehended by Mother who whisked me away to a place named Turtle Rock. This majestic stone that sits overlooking the marsh just so happens to be a genuine Chumash Indian birthing rock. If you look closely you'll be able to see the lengthwise indentation where women in labor would lay on their backs in preparation for delivery. I was skeptical at first but after slowly reclining into it and seeing the view you have at that angle I could see the appeal. However, I imagine a beautiful view is no compensation for an IV full of drugs.

There also happened to be a Tupperware time capsule hidden under a beautiful abalone shell to the side of the rock. I have no idea how my mom came across it in the first place but inside was a little book where people who had come before us filled up a page with their experience. Some of the stories were as fascinating as they were trippy & incoherent. Sadly I forgot to bring my cell phone along and didn't have a chance to call my best friend to wish her a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY. So I did the only thing that I could do (see below)

Trader Sams Enchanted Tiki Bar

Seeing as how I've never been a fan of child abuse, I had no choice but to take my little brother on his first trip to Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar in Downtown Disney while making our way south for Thanksgiving. Needless to say, he was thoroughly enchanted. It took everything in us not to abandon our time obligations & run straight through those pearly blue ticket turn-wheels that bridge the gap between reality and aesthetic euphoria.

I'd of liked to have spent my entire Thanksgiving vacation at Disneyland. As a matter of fact, I want to spend my entire life at Disneyland. I could simply sleep alongside the Pirate's corpse in his beautiful French-Italian rococo bed draped in a canopy of red velvet, slowly falling asleep to the lullaby of a ghost played harpsichord. Or perhaps the dark and treacherous caves of Tom Sawyers island where no one would ever find me!? On second thought, those caves are just as likely to be inhibited by mysterious Red Men docking their canoes for the night as they are to be riddled with hidden treasure that pirates are sure to come back & claim on some moonless night.

Hmm, Goofy's Bounce House seems accommodating. Everything inside is inflatable so I'm sure there would be room for me to sleep somewhere. Then again, I would never be able to tolerate the foghorn on Donald's boat constantly going off at all hours of the night (which is sure to happen considering Chip & Dale live in the oak tree immediately adjacent to Donald's boat and are sure to irritate him throughout the night). I suppose I'll just have to think about it a little longer, until then...

Lucky for me it fits seamlessly in our closet, with the bottom of Tyler's shirts barley missing the cabinet's top surface : ) Blondy is now nice and full with vintage lingerie, silk pajamas, Pendleton cardigans, and blue jeans!

Balsamic Cherry Hearts

To capitalize on how wonderfully romantic long rainy days make me feel, I took the liberty of whipping up some delicious...for my delicious ; )

This was achieved by cutting the gingerbread that I had made with a heart shaped cookie cutter while it was still fairly warm, sauteing dark morello cherries and sauce with balsamic vinegar, a concoction intended for drizzling all over your hearts, and topping it all off with soy vanilla ice cream and chocolate shavings from my favorite chocolate bar.

Mmm, just looking at those abnormally huge portions that restaurants have brainwashed me into thinking is standard normal feels so good!

She said that she wanted to paint but didn't have any art supplies, only now it's totally taking off and Wanda Jackson is using the painting she did of her for some upcoming promotional stuff. Imagine my delight when I woke up to her newest picture of yours truly in my natural state!

Marry Me Vee Paul!

I recently found Father's graduating class website (Class of '67, woo hoo!)

The fact that his graduating class has a website is fun enough but OMG did I make 2 amazing discoveries! The first was this fine photo (Poppas in the middle)that I thought was pretty awesome. That is until I showed it to him and he said "oh yea, that's me in a Mexican prison. We had just been caught with a bunch of Hash." Then I thought it was the greatest photo of all time! Lord knows I wouldn't be throwin' up dueces in a Mexican prison....

The second, and equally if not more so, important discovery I made was the love of my life, VEE PAUL! As I scrolled down the photos I was stunned by the coolest girl in the history of high school! Right away my dad said "Vee Paul! Ah man, she was cooool." Yeah, no duh! I'm obsessed with her. Vee Paul is everything I want to be in life. I'm going to kill myself so I can come back to earth and rename myself Vee Paul. So, nice knowin' ya!

It Was A Teenage Weddin' & The Old Folks Wished 'Em Well

I'm ordering prints of my wedding gown photos tonight. Looking at them feels so nice that why not do it twice? Reminiscing over your wedding photos can be an awfully strange experience, an out of body experience to be specific. It's sometimes hard to believe that the girl standing in a gigantic white dress up at the altar is you...as in me! The only thing I can compare it to is being born. I can't remember how it felt but I'm sure it was uncomfortable. Uncomfortable in the sense of going through a completely unfamiliar experience where you have no idea what comes next yet you're awfully excited to be somewhere brand new...oh, and your entire family is there starring.

As some fellow savvy bloggers pointed out in As Time Goes By....why no mo curvacious Crystal? I realize that in the scheme of things this is truly an irrelevant issue. However, upon satisfying my curiosities via a google search I stumbled upon this swanky photo shoot featuring a nostalgic look at the former Elvis of "plus-size" modeling, Miss Crystal Renn:

Mmm, gotta love that hanky panky narrative. I feel like running out right now to buy myself a pound or so of fake platinum strands so I can do the beehive bun 24/7. Actually, I feel like doing that every day. Don't you just love the way society tells you how to dress for New Years? I'm not kidding, I truly do. One of these New Years I'm going to get out of the tub, secure a beehive bun to my over sized dome, and whip out a dress that would make 1973 Brian Eno pea green with envy @ how glam I look. I shall then proceed to some yuppy party that will make me feel cranky cuz I ain't with my kitty and want to be home in my bath...alone with my beehive bun. Long live "Curvacious Crystal"!!

For those of you who might not have heard of the Criterion Collection, they describe themselves as such:

Since 1984, the Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements. Over the years, as we moved from laserdisc to DVD, Blu-ray disc, and online streaming, we’ve seen a lot of things change, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to publishing the defining moments of cinema for a wider and wider audience.

They recently held a "Box Shot" contest asking contestants to submit photos of one of their fav C.C. movies in a setting that evokes the theme or mood of the story. I chose Life Aquatic. Not only is the film near and dear to my heart but it offered an excellent opportunity to experiment with lots of bright colors. My dearest darling, King of the Husbands, and I set out to capture our Zissouesque image in a setting worthy of a real life Disney adaptation of the Little Mermaid.

Despite my Dearest nearly freezing to death, slicing my left hand and spilling blood everywhere (before our photo shoot even began), and possibly jeopardizing the life of a beautiful Asteroidea (nothing bad happened to it, there was just always the chance...) we had a nice time. After all, they say adventurous situations with the one you love increases the level of dopamine being released in your brain ; ) ; ) ; )

However, the ten honorable mentions were announced today and then later the top 10 finalist. To say the least, I was discouraged when seeing that I hadn't even made it in to the honorable mention category. Most of their choices were agreeable. However, I still can't help but feel that my entries were on par with the finalist's (you may reference the 2 above photos to decide for yourself). I put a lot of effort into getting the color and texture of my sea props to look as similar as possible to the awesomely Pladoughesque portrayal of oceanic life presented in the film.

Damn, Vogue's September issue has got it going on. I was looking forward to the copy so I could finally see Kate Moss's fancy pants wedding in living color. Homegurl did not disappoint. I love her for going all out. Something as special in a woman's life as her wedding deserves to have all the stops pulled out. It's one of those things that you're sure to never regret.

However, it was this cutsie "mod inspired" shoot that really stole my heart. I can never resist a bouffant and sling back flats. I hope you enjoyed it as much as Moi.

In the olden days, I was a little juvenile delinquent living under the care of my flame truck driving father (luckily I was just flame retardant enough to get by). One of the many corny perks that went along with residing in "Beautiful Burbank, California" were the weekly classic car shows every Friday night at the very first Bob's Big Boy restaurant. I've been spending all my free time in bed with my cat watching Liz Taylor movies. Suddenly, Last Summer has been played consecutively all weekend. Pyewacket, my dear little kitty cat, tells me it's her favorite. I came across these photos the other day while reading Disney designer Kevin Kidney's blog. This is what he had to say about them:

Our pal, Tim Haack recently discovered a treasure trove of twelve original color negatives showcasing females in fabulous clothes against the fairy-tale backdrop of Disneyland.

Who took these wonderful photos? And who are the three ladies, each one giving her all to look stylish in awkward poses and over-the top outfits? We wish we knew. But we do know the photos were taken for the April 9, 1961 issue of Midwest Magazine, a supplemental newspaper insert in the Chicago Sun-Times. Anyone out there have a copy?

"I'm Mourning Elizabeth Taylor!" Makeup

I'm still devastated over Elizabeth's passing. I guess I want the rest of the world to know how overcome with grief I am. So this morning I did what any real woman would do and painted on some "I Love Elizabeth Taylor FOREVER!" eye makeup. I've decided to do it everyday until my heart has healed. It's basically my version of a Jewish man growing out a beard while in mourning.

I am so utterly devastated over Elizabeth Taylor's passing. There really are no words. Never has a celebrity touched me in the way she had. She epitomized glamour and feminine sophistication all while living the most vibrant unapologetic lifestyle. It's woman like her that make "she-devil" a compliment. She showed us that a woman could be a bombshell and have greater strength and wit than any man. I am eternally grateful for her presence in this world and for the strong source of inspiration she'll continue to provide me with throughout life.

Richard Burton once wrote to her:
"You are probably the best actress in the world, which, combined with your extraordinary beauty, makes you unique. … When, as an actress, you want to be funny, you are funnier than W.C. Fields; when, as an actress, you are meant to be tragic, you are tragic."

No offence, but I've never cared for fondant. It's kind of creepy. I opted for butter cream frosting covered with white chocolate shavings. I was really happy with the result. The whole cake looks lively. What was inside you ask?
